Crocheted Baby Booties

Introduction

Before you begin, learn how to crochet. Making something by hand for an arriving baby is a thoughtful gesture on the part of a friend or relative—and it's also a nice way for an expectant mom to pass time toward the end of her pregnancy. These adorable shoes are an excellent project for any crocheter.

17 sts and 13 rows equals 4 inches in half double crochet

ch = chain stitch 
dc = double crochet
st = stitch
sl st = slip stitch
B = beginning
RS = right side
hdc = half double crochet
hdc2tog = half double crochet 2 stitches together

Age: Infancy to 6 months

Foot circumference: 4 inches

Foot length from heel: 3 1/4 inches

  • Worsted weight 100 percent cotton, 1.75 ounces, in ecru (A), lilac (B), sky blue (C), lime green (D), pale yellow (E), apricot (F)

  • Crochet hook, U.S. size G6 (4 mm)

  • Tapestry needle

  • Buttons, 5/8 inches

steps

  1. Shoe Sole

    Foundation ch: With A, ch 9.

    Round 1: work 3 dc in third ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 5 ch, 7 dc in last chain, turn piece with remaining edge of foundation ch at top, 1 dc in each of next 5 ch, 3 dc in last ch, join with a sl st in first dc. (23 sts)

    Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in next 3 sts, 1 dc in next 5 sts. 2 dc in each of next 7 sts, 1 dc in next 5 sts, dc in each of next 3 sts, join with a sl st in top of first dc. (36 sts). Fasten off.

  2. Upper Shoe

    Round 1: with B and RS facing, ch 1, work hdc in back loop only of each st around, join with a sl st in first hdc. (36 sts)

    Round 2: Ch 1, sc around, join with a sl st in first sc.

    Round 3: Ch 1, sc in next 10 sts, hdc2tog 3 times, hdc in next 4 sts, hdc2tog 3 times, sc to end, join with a sl st in first sc. (30 sts remain)

    Round 4: Ch 1, sc in next 6 sts, hdc in next st, dc2tog 6 times, hdc into next st, sc to end, join with a sl st in first sc. (24 sts remain)

    Fasten off. Weave in all ends.

  3. Straps (make 2)

    Foundation ch: With B, ch 16.

    Row 1: Beg in sixth ch from hook work hdc in next st to form button loop, then hdc to end. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

  4. Bow

    Foundation ch: With B, ch 10.

    Row 1: Beg in second ch from hook, hdc in each ch to end, change to C.

    Row 2: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across, change to D.

    Row 3: Ch 2, turn, hdc across, change to E.

    Row 4: Ch 2, turn, hdc across, change to F.

    Row 5: Ch 1, turn, hdc across, change to B.

    Row 6: Ch 1, turn, hdc across. Fasten off.

  5. Finishing

    Weave in all ends.

    Sew one strap to each shoe, making sure straps are on opposite sides to each other. Sew a button to each shoe on opposite straps.

     

    Pinch center of bow together using photo as a guide, sew a few sts around center of bow with B, then sew bow to show.
