Q: Can a change in diet or exercise help speed up my metabolism?
A: There's a lot of hype out there about miracle foods that can improve your metabolism, but if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. There are, however, some strategies that can guide you. Eating small servings every three to four hours will boost your metabolism and fend off junk-food cravings. Lean protein, whole grains, and fresh produce will give you the energy to exercise. At the gym, do strength training (such as lifting weights) two or three times per week to build muscle mass, which in turn helps you burn more calories all day long. To lose weight, also aim to do 30 to 60 minutes of cardio most days of the week.
