Hand-bleached place mats make for the perfect base for a visually appealing place setting. At each seat, an ear of dried miniature corn, its husks sprayed silver, unfurls elegantly on a platinum-rimmed plate and echoes the two-tone effect. Store-bought chocolate truffles shine with coats of edible petal dust and silver leaf.

How to do it

Part 1

Step 1

Stretch two rubber bands around the vase vertically, about 1 inch apart.

Step 2

Fill the vase with 1 1/2 inches of bleach. Set the place mats (three at a time), loosely rolled, into the vase between bands.

Step 3

Let it soak in a well-ventilated area until the desired shade is achieved, up to five hours.

Step 4

Carefully rinse bleached area; lay flat, and let it dry completely, about two hours. Repeat to bleach the other side.
