Laura Masterson: 47th Avenue Farm
Laura's dream of an urban farm to produce "food grown in the city for people who live there" was born in her home in 1992. Today, her neighborhood farm now feeds more than 200 people and delivers to several renowned restaurants in the area.
Laura learned her love of the earth from her grandfather, who always maintained a vegetable garden and fruit trees. After college, she started a landscaping business, but her underlying dream was to farm. With much hard work, her farm has blossomed, but Laura maintains her local principles.
"Community-supported agriculture should be just that," she says, "a place where community members come together to learn where and how their food is grown." Work parties are held at the farm, and members meet weekly at Laura's farmhouse to collect their share of the harvest. The latest additions to 47th Avenue Farm are two Belgium draft horses that work with Laura to plow the fields.
Elected to attend the Slow Food conference in Turin, Italy, in 2006, Laura now lives to share her dream with others. From local schoolchildren to the Chinese Ministry of Land and Resources, she gives tours to anyone who wants to know more about local, organic farming. From a child loving the earth to a successful urban farmer, Laura Masterson is living and realizing her dream each day.
