Preparing Appliques

Source: Martha Stewart Living, August 2009

This fold-and-cut how-to is the preliminary step in each applique project and calls for one of our partial-flower templates.

  • Partial-flower templates

  • Square piece of fabric

  • Iron

  • Scissors

  • Disappearing-ink pen

  • Pins

  1. Lay a square piece of fabric, cut to the desired size, flat on your work surface.

  2. Make 3 folds, as shown:

    1. Fold the fabric's bottom edge to the top edge; press with an iron.

    2. Fold the left edge to the right edge; press.

    3. Fold the bottom-right corner to the top-left corner; press. (The bottom-left corner will become the center when the fabric is unfolded.)

  3. Download the desired template, and print it. Resize with a photocopier as needed, and cut out.

  4. Lay the template on top of the folded fabric triangle, aligning the V of the template with the bottom-left corner, as shown.

  5. Trace the template with a disappearing-ink pen, and remove template.

  6. Pin fabric layers together inside the traced outline, as shown.

  7. Cut along the traced outline using sharp, pointed fabric shears. For best results, turn the fabric as you cut, holding the scissors somewhat stationary. Unfold the fabric to reveal the complete motif.
