Leaf Layering How-To

Source: Martha Stewart Living, March 2006

  1. Cut a healthy leaf from the plant with a bit of stem attached to act as an anchor.

  2. Prepare a growing medium by mixing equal parts peat and perlite.

  3. Moisten, but don't soak, the medium.

  4. Place the leaf on the growing mix, weighting it with pebbles to maintain contact.

  5. Using a sharp knife, slit through the major leaf veins; dust with rooting hormone.

  6. Place tray in a warm, humid place, out of direct sun. Mist regularly. Plantlets will form at slits; cut apart, and pot up.
