Taste Test: Organic Beer

Body+Soul, June 2008

We tasted 26 organic beers to find the most worthy of backyard barbecues and beach bonfires. These three got cheers all around.

1. Best Light-Bodied
Peak Pale Ale
Organic caramel malts give a slight sweetness to this pale ale, nicely complementing the bright, happy body. The Maine-brewed beer pours beautifully, with a light hue and generous head.

2. Best Medium-Bodied
Wolaver's Brown Ale
Dangerously drinkable, this medium-bodied brew from Vermont has a hint of smokiness to its smooth, malty flavor.

3. Best Dark
Butte Creek Porter
This Chico, California-brewed porter topped the list with a complex yet smooth flavor and notes of coffee, tobacco, and dark chocolate.
