Dog Washing

The Martha Stewart Show, May 2007

Bath time can be great quality time to spend with your dog. Follow these instructions to make sure the process is relaxing, fun and healthy.

What You'll Need

  • Shiny Paw Therapeutic Shampoo
  • Shiny Paw Therapeutic Natural Conditioner
  • Shiny Paw Ear Cleaner
  • Bathing tub
  • Towels for matting the bottom of bathing tub and for drying dog afterward
  • Tissue or cotton swab
  • Washcloth
  • Hose or pitcher

How to Wash Your Dog

  • Place a towel on the bottom of tub (to help dog not slip), fill tub with water.

Ear cleaning

  • Put in ear drops, fill external ear canal and earflap with solution and massage gently for 30 seconds. Gently wipe with a tissue or cotton swab. Fill a second time and just wipe without massaging.
  • To help prevent ear infections, it is best to use an all-natural ear cleaner (like Shiny Paw) and flush ears¬†twice a month.

  • Use washcloth to wet dog's face.
  • Use hose or pitcher to wet rest of dog with warm water.
  • Begin shampooing dog; start at face and work your way to tail.
  • Let shampoo set for several minutes.
  • Dog shampoo should be low-foaming so it rinses away easily and does not strip nutrients from coat.
  • Use washcloth to rinse shampoo from face.
  • Use hose or pitcher to thoroughly rinse rest of dog.

  • Massage conditioner throughout coat; avoid contact with dog's eyes.
  • Apply additional conditioner to matted or tangled areas.
  • Allow a few minutes for conditioner to penetrate coat.
  • Use hose or pitcher to thoroughly rinse rest of dog.

  • Wrap a towel around dog's body and pat dry.
  • One should never attempt to break any mats or tangles when the coat is still damp or wet.
  • Once coat is completely dry, brush dog.

Extra Tips

  • Dogs with more wiry coats should be brushed first.
  • Talk to and encourage your pet through the washing process.
  • Conditioning is especially important in the summer when coats can bleach and dry in the sun.
