I would not suggest making this cake. It takes an excessive amount of time and does not even taste edible. It actually resembles playdough... The icing is very soupy, thank god for betty crocker who came to the rescue where martha stewart failed. It does look very pretty though. It would be a good prop at a party for people who do not actually like to eat.

I can't stand when crappy cooks rate recipes badly because they screwed it up! Considering there are plenty of positive reviews obviously those of you who had bad results need look no further than the mirror when placing blame!!! That makes WAY more sense than a bad recipe making it past Martha's team, somehow magically getting good results from other cooks, but no you couldn't possibly have screwed it up--it MUST be a bad recipe!! Gimme a break!!! Stick to your box mix and canned frosting or basic American buttercream if you can't handle the advanced stuff. Don't bad mouth a perfectly good recipe because you don't have the skills to execute it correctly!!!

I have made this recipe several times and it always a big hit. I have made it as a cake and also as cupcakes. It is a delicious cake as vanilla, and I have also added lemon juice and zest at times.Soft. moist and yummy. I like the idea of adding multiple flavors for each layer. I think I'll try that next time.

Awful recipe, not enough batter for a 9" tin Not worth the time. Great concept, just not worth it.

Most layer cakes are made by filling the cake pan about 1/2 full, baking, then slicing the cake in half to make the "layers". Because this cake is 7 layers that are all different colors you need to initially make all the layers very thin. I've made this twice and both times it turned out perfectly. Just know that the batter will just barely fill the bottom of the pan with each layer.

You know what may make this a smidgen more awesome? Adding the appropriate color (and flavor) powdered jello for each color into the mix for flavor. Just a thought. Strawberry, Blueberry, Lemon, Lime, Orange...

was watching the rainbow cake vid and i just want to share something with you. All you need to do to know the sequence of the rainbow colours is remember this sentence: Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain. You take the first letter of each word R stands for red, O stands for orange and so on :) and voila you have the colours of the rainbow in sequence!! :) hope my suggestion proves futile when someone tries out the cake

To remember the color sequence, to to bottom, we always remembered the name "Roy G. Biv". Red, Orange, Yellow (ROY) - Green (G.) - Blue, Indigo, Violet (BIV). There ya go.

A couple of years ago I made a cake like this, however I colored each layer of icing and flavored each layer too according to color; for my granddaughter's birthday.

I made this for my friends birthday. It was a big hit, and everyone loved it. A bit time consuming, because I used two rounds pans. It was fairly easy to make.
