You don't need a stocking full of products to get ready for your next holiday party. For a modern, sophisticated look—that doesn't have anything to do with glitter—try a sheer golden eyeshadow paired with a ruby lip color. Houston, Texas, makeup artist Tonya Riner suggests applying lipstick first and using the bold shade as a guide to subtly play up the rest of your features. Ahead, how to get the look in three easy steps.

Begin with a red lip.

Garnet is the most universally flattering red—it's not too blue or orange—while warm, rusty hues pop on darker skin. Apply your red of choice straight from the tube onto the center of your lower lip—then rub your lips together and use a finger to blend. Looking for a formula that will take you through the entire winter season? Try Lancôme L'Absolu Rouge Ruby Cream in Rubie Z (this works on every skin tone) or Queen Ruby (this option looks lovely on darker complexions) ($32 each, sephora.com).

Swipe on some shimmer.

A stroke of gold illuminates and brightens your eyes. Riner suggests warm brass—we're partial to Tom Ford Emotion-Proof Eye Color in Minimalist ($46, sephora.com)—for deep skin tones and champagne for fairer folks. If you fall into the latter category, put Revlon ColorStay Crème Eyeshadow in Creme Brulee ($8, walmart.com) on your radar.

Perfect your complexion.

Tone down any redness or discoloration with an emollient concealer, says Riner. Tap in Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer ($30, shop.nordstrom.com) with your ring finger anywhere you need it—paying attention to common hot spots, like your nose and chin—for full coverage.
