Origami Hearts

All friends and family will be aflutter at the sight of these paper hearts, folded origami-style, in two ways. One is charming in its simplicity. The other is embellished with a decorative bow.

Introduction

  • Origami paper (BUBU Double-Sided Colorful Origami Paper, $8.99 for 200 sheets, amazon.com)

steps

  1. For simple origami heart: Starting with a square sheet of origami paper, fold in half on the diagonal, bringing top corner to bottom one; unfold. Fold in half again, bringing left corner to right one; unfold. (Note: If using a two-sided sheet of paper, start with the wrong side facing up.)

  2. Fold top corner to center crease.

  3. Fold bottom corner to top edge.

  4. Fold right side up diagonally to align with center crease; repeat on left side.

  5. Flip over folded paper; fold side and top points in half.

  6. Flip folded heart over to front side. (Optional: If giving as a token on Valentine's Day, insert a slip of paper with a message into the center pocket.)

  7. For origami heart with a bow: Starting with a square sheet of origami paper, fold in half lengthwise, bringing top corner to opposite top one; unfold. Fold in half again, bringing bottom corner to bottom one; unfold. (Note: If using a two-sided sheet of paper, start with the right side facing up.)

  8. Flip over folded paper; fold in half on the diagonal, bringing bottom corner to top one; unfold. Fold in half again, bringing left corner to right one; unfold.

  9. Flip over folded paper; fold it, using the creases, into a triangle.

  10. Fold top point to align with center crease, resulting in a trapezoid shape.

  11. Open the vertical flaps on either side, and fold them down to flatten.

  12. Fold each of four outer corners to align with center crease, resulting in two middle points.

  13. Flip over folded paper; fold top edge in thirds, and reopen. Fold each half of the top edge on the diagonal, bringing two corners to align with center crease.

  14. Fold the upper corners into points and fold them again into the rounded tops of a heart.

  15. Flip over folded paper; fold bottom corners to align with center crease.

  16. To create the bow, fold bottom points upward into "ends" and open middle points into "loops."
