  • Air-dry clay in white, black, and terra-cotta (Activa Plus Air-Dry Clay, in Terra-cotta, White, and Black, from $5 each for 1.1 lb.,

  • Rolling pin

  1. Knead a plum-size piece of terra-cotta-colored air-dry clay and pea-size bits of white and gray (mixed from black and white) air-dry clay together to create a swirled effect.

  2. Using a rolling pin, flatten the clay into a 1/4-inch-thick rectangle. Cut four 2-by-5-inch strips out of it. Overlap the edges, smooth the seams with your finger, and let dry upright (to help keep the shape).
