This Is Why Clear Mascara Is the Latest Beauty Product You Need in Your Makeup Bag
If you want a natural, no-makeup makeup look, clear mascara should be a staple in your beauty arsenal. "Clear mascara basically adds length, shine, and definition without darkening your lashes—and without creating clumps," says celebrity makeup artist Coleen Campbell-Olwell, who's worked with Alexis Bledel and Kate Mara. "I've personally and professionally used clear mascara when I want a natural look, yet still want lashes that have some length and definition. It's also great to use if you don't want raccoon eyes from the heat in the summer, or if waterproof mascara just doesn't work." For amazing, seemingly "born-with-it" lashes, start with an eyelash curler, which will give you extra lift, then apply your clear mascara. "It will almost create the effect of having had your lashes tinted and curled," Campbell-Olwell says.
But clear mascara isn't just for your lashes: It's one of those inexpensive, back-pocket products that makeup artists keep in their bags for a multitude of reasons. In a pinch, you can use it as eyebrow gel to keep your brows groomed and tame—something that Campbell-Olwell has done for years. You can also use it as a mascara primer, which Campbell-Olwell says might then require fewer coats of regular mascara, resulting in fewer clumps on your lashes. In lieu of hairspray, you can also use it on your hair to keep wispy, baby hairs in place. )Campbell-Olwell also says she's also used clear mascara on men, and she reaches for this handy product if they want a little something extra to add polish to their look without seeming obvious.)
Convinced you need to give this multitasking product a try? Here, we've rounded up clear mascaras that you'll love to use.
It's no wonder Campbell-Olwell loves the clear version of the best-selling Great Lash mascara. It separates lashes to give you a pretty, wide-eyed look.
