It seems like every January brings with it the urge to change something. That may be a relinquished interest in cooking, taking up knitting, or redoing your kitchen. But it could be just as easy as giving your bedroom a fresh coat of paint. If you're looking for a reason to revamp your space, the new year is a perfect time for re-evaluating your living situation. And, as always, Etsy is here to make it a little easier when it comes to the research.

Etsy just shared its take on the six trends that will be taking over 2019, courtesy of Etsy Trend Expert Dayna Isom Johnson. There's a lot you can do to refresh your living space—or even your wardrobe, if that's most your interest. These trends translate from your home, to your outfit, even to the gifts you buy this year.

1. Burnt Orange

This is the hue du jour you'll see everywhere this year, according to Johnson. From stunning monochrome outfits to pops of burnt orange in accessories and knickknacks, this hue will give you a little pop of color wherever you need it. We can help in one aspect here: If you're looking to paint one of your rooms orange, we've got a guide for that.

2. Maximalism

We were big fans of maximalism in 2018 and that's not going to change anytime soon. Don't know where to start? Decoupage is a great way to add some patterned personality to plain pieces of furniture. (Here's how to do it.) As a general rule, no pattern or color is too much when it comes to maximilism.

3. Preserved Petals

Give dried flowers a second chance at life in your décor. You can mount pressed flowers in frames, turn them into stunning seasonal bouquets, or, if you're looking for something a bit different, display them in lightbulbs.

4. Southwestern Style

"Last year's succulent craze hinted at this cowgirl-chic trend, but in 2019 we're taking it to the next level: Etsy sellers will be bringing back bolo ties, desert illustrations, and bold woven textiles for an all-out Southwestern resurgence," says Johnson. To get this look, opt for items made of more natural materials (think: clay, leather, or woven fabrics). Also, pair some turquoise with your burnt orange to take advantage of two 2019 trends.

5. Sloths

Everyone has their favorite animal, but the sloth has stolen the most hearts on Etsy, it seems. This is an especially easy trend to pick up for nurseries—pops of this furry friend, whether it's a framed print or a mobile, will bring smiles to everyone (especially in the form of this adorable two-in-one Halloween costume).

6. '70s and '90s Details

There's also a nostalgic throwback when it comes to trend round-ups and this year we’re looking to the ’70s and ’90s. Johnson suggests adding rattan and terrazzo in your home to pick up on this trend. Looking for a DIY project? Here's a how-to for making your own terrazzo table out of recycled glass.
