We're taking notes.

By honoring the past and embracing the future, Elizabeth Roberts has made a name for herself (and her eponymous design firm), transforming centuries-old brownstones into sunny, eclectic, and comfortable spaces (including Athena Calderone's stunning new abode). A trademark of her projects is open, airy kitchens that you want to lounge in “even when you’re not cooking,” she says. Some, including her own, have wood-burning grills. But all exemplify the mom and California native’s clean designs and clear sense of order: “You don’t need to be told where to put your shoes or find the silverware,” she says. Roberts, who has also created stores for designers Ulla Johnson and Rachel Comey, often dresses in black, throwing chic blazers over dresses or reaching for loose, elegant suits by the Swedish brand Rodebjer. Pragmatic and polished—we’d expect nothing less.
