Rustic Woven Lanterns

Candlelight flickers through the loose weave of these hurricane lanterns. They're made from place mats that we simply rolled into tubes and stitched along the seams, then positioned over pillar candles (in tall glass holders, for safety).

materials

  • Loose-weave place mat (Pictured: Fishnet woven place-mat sets, in Blackin Black, $12 for 2, westelm.com.)

  • Large needle, such as an embroidery needle

  • Waxed cord (Pictured: Waxed cotton cord, by Suzanne Moore’s, 1 mm, in Deep Yellow, from $3.50, ncbasketworks.com.)

  • Glass candleholders (Pictured: Glass cylinder vase, 6" by 12", $15, jamaligarden.com)

  • Candles (Pictured: Round pillar candles, 3" by 6", beehive alchemy.com.)

steps

  1. Bend mat into a cylinder shape; join the two ends by stitching with cord along seam. Place over candle in holder.
