materials

  • Pants

  • Ribbon and appliques (Pictured: Striped grosgrain, 1½", $3 a yd.; 50 mm velvet ribbon, 2", in Baby Pink, $4 a yd., 25 mm metallic ribbon, in Gold, $2 a yd., mjtrim.com; Cotton twill tape, 1", $1.75 a yd., pacifictrimmings.com)

  • Hand sewing supplies (or fabric glue for no-sew)

  • Fabric scissors

steps

  1. Cut two strips of ribbon—velvet, preppy grosgrain, subtle metallic, or twill—six inches longer than the waist-to-hem length.

  2. Sew them onto the outer side seams, or adhere them with fabric glue or iron-on bonding. Continue up the insides of the legs so they show when you roll up the cuffs, and you’re off to the races.
