You'll be surprised at how quickly a few simple stitches — back stitch, French knot, split stitch, and straight stitch — can create a beautiful, wearable garden.

Introduction

This project from "Hoop Dreams: Modern Hand Embroidery" was reprinted with permission from Abrams Books.

This basic construction method can easily be used to make pins of different shapes and sizes. There's no pattern to transfer, so don't be afraid to experiment with different stitches and motifs to create your own.

Thread colors used for pin:

carnation (4 strands)

Ecru (6 strands)

Golden olive (4 strands)

Navy blue (4 strands)

Topaz (6 strands)

Finished size: Approximately 1 1/4 inches in diameter

materials

  • Marking tool

  • Ruler

  • Piece of wool or wool-blend felt

  • Cotton embroidery floss

  • Embroidery needle (larger sizes work best on felt)

  • Fabric scissors

  • Sewing pins

  • Bar pin

  • Hot glue gun

steps

  1. Cut out two 3-by-3-inch squares of felt. Lightly mark a 1-inch circle in the center of one of the pieces of felt.

  2. To make the central rose, sew 3 straight circles in the center of the circle.

  3. Surround the straight stitches with other slightly overlapping straight stitches, as shown. Continue overlapping the stitches, increasing your stitch length as the rose grows until it reaches the diameter of approximately 3/8 inches.

  4. The leaves on the left are made up of clusters of straight stitches. Start at the longest point and make a series of straight stitches to form a leaf shape. Bring the needle down at the same point for each stitch.

  5. To make berries, sew a few French knots along the bottom of the rose.

  6. To make the leaves on the right, sew pairs of short straight stitches to form tiny V shapes, stacked closely together.

  7. Pin the two layers of felt together.

  8. Split stitch around the marked circle to join the layers of felt. Finish with a few back stitchs through the back layer, pass your thread between the two layers of felt, and trim.

  9. Use a pair of sharp fabric scissors to trim closely around the split-stitched border.

  10. Use a hot glue gun to fix the bar pin to the back of the felt pin. (You can also stitch the pin in place, but this is best done before joining the layers of felt together.)
