Maple Cream Sandwich Cookies

Recipe photo courtesy of Mike Krautter

A double dose of maple sets these leaf-shaped sandwich cookies apart: maple sugar goes into the buttery shortbread dough, and maple syrup sweetens the rich cream filling.

Cook's Notes

When cutting out cookies, cut out half of the cookies, then flip cutter over and cut out remaining cookies to get identical leaves for making sandwiches.

Do NOT make the maple leaf sandwich cookies; they are essentially Diabetes on a plate. There are 5 T - Five TABLESPOONS! - of sugar per ONE cookie. That's more than 1/4 CUP. Just 4 of these contain a full cup of sugar. Even by Martha's insane normal sugar standard, this is over the top. Pour a quarter cup of sugar in a bowl. Top with another teaspoon. Now try to eat it. Right. Martha, wake up. It's possible to make tasty treats without poisoning those who eat them.
