Is there a more perfect dessert than a batch of cookies? They can be as simple or as showstopping as you want, they can always be made ahead, and they’re easy to transport and share. Martha knows this better than anyone—she's probably made thousands of cookies throughout her career, and she's got plenty more in store for us this season on "Martha Bakes." She's embarking on a global tour of cookies, from French and Italian delicacies to Latin American and Middle Eastern treats.
Martha’s kicking off the season in Scandinavia, with stops in Denmark, Sweden, and Finland. She’ll be whipping up three cookies that would be equally at home alongside a cup of coffee as they would in a holiday gift tin. Get a sneak peek at the recipes below, and be sure to tune in this weekend.
Danish Butter Cookies
A rich buttery dough is piped into thick rings and baked until golden for these easy five-ingredient cookies.
Swedish Spice Cookies (Muskotsnittar)
Brown sugar imparts an irresistible caramel flavor to these crisp triple-spice cookies (nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger).
Finnish Star Cookies (Joulutorttu)
No cookie cutter required for these pinwheels! Just give the squares of dough a snip at each corner, then fold over every other tip. Martha fills the center with raspberry preserves, but you can use any flavor you like (prune jam is traditional).
"Martha Bakes" season 9 airs on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings).
