Hanukkah Sign with Mason Jars

Put your collection of kitchen jars to good use this holiday season: they make perfect stands to spell out a festive greeting or phrase.

This idea comes from our contributor Debi Traub. This was used as a decoration for her Hanukkah Party with Latke Bar.


  • Wooden letters

  • Gold glitter paint (Pictured: Martha Stewart multi-surface glitter acrylic craft paint in Florentine Gold, $2.99 for 2 oz.,

  • Small mason jars

  • Thin wooden dowels

  • Ribbon

  • White sand

  • Hot glue gun

  • Scissors

  • Paintbrush


  1. Cut wooden dowels to equal size, if needed; set side.

  2. Paint wooden letters in 1 to 2 coats of gold craft paint; let dry completely.

  3. Hot-glue a wooden dowel to the back of each painted wooden letter.

  4. Fill mason jars with sand. Tie a length of ribbon into a bow around the neck of each jar, if desired.

  5. Secure each letter-on-a-stick into a mason jar, align to spell out a phrase such as "Hanukkah" or "Latke bar" and display.
