materials

  • Vintage ladder (A Rustic Garden Old 5-Rung Rustic Vintage wooden ladder, $60, arusticgarden.com)
  • 8 stainless-steel eye hooks (Rogar long pot-rack hooks, $19 for 4, kitchensource.com)
  • Stainless steel chain
  • Bolt cutters
  • 8 quick links

steps

  1. If your ladder is longer than you’d like, saw off one end, leaving legs equal to those on the opposite end, then sand them to match.
  2. Screw eye hooks into top of ladder. Screw corresponding eye hooks into the ceiling, making sure to anchor them into beams.
  3. Measure and cut chain into 4 equal lengths using bolt cutters.
  4. Hang chain using 4 quick links, then attach ladder to chain using remaining quick links.
