Let's Go Under the Sea: A Mermaid-Inspired Birthday Party for Willow

Callie Brackett of We Tie The Knots hosts an under-the-sea mermaid birthday party for her 2-year-old daughter Willow. It featured a tiered mermaid cake, seashells decorations, and a shimmery sequin tablecloth.

Like Mother, Like Daughter

Brackett's childhood was a festive one, filled with her mother's elaborately themed birthday parties. It makes sense then that this became major inspiration for Brackett's career choice later in life. "It must run in the family," Brackett tells Martha Stewart Living. "[My mother's parties] were one of the reasons my sister and I started We Tie The Knots."

When her daughter’s birthday came around, the event planner knew she had to go all out. “Of course, I started dreaming up my daughter’s birthday party the day after her first!”

Diving In

Turning to her most creative friends, Brackett shared her color palette — soft watery blues, baby pinks, and glittery greens and golds — and a general idea of her vision. "Then, I told them to surprise me with the rest!" Turns out, that idea was golden.

From mini starfish to flowers nestled in netting, the table quickly turned into an underwater sea of treasures.

Peppered throughout were Boukates' pink flowers and leafy greens, helping to truly transport guests (of all sizes!) into the beautiful big blue.

Small pieces of driftwood scattered around a sparkly sequined tablecloth combined nature with girly glam.

"I was obsessed with the kids' estate table. It made them actually feel like they were sitting under the sea," says Brackett.

Sea, Sweet Sea

For a pretty (kid-friendly!) display that popped, Poppies and Paper created this paper flower wall, complete with petals of all varieties in the theme's soft color scheme.

A Wave of Treats

Bringing the party plans full circle, Brackett credits her mom to taking the sea theme to a delicious new level with her adorably-themed food to match. “She made the under-the-sea Jello cups and graham crackers snacks,” she says. “The kinds just thought they were the best thing ever.”

Taking the Cake

With a two-tiered centerpiece cake, courtesy of Sweet Peeps Bakery, to bring the party table together, it was time to feast! Mermaid scales adorned the base, mixing and matching the theme’s cute colors, while a glittery personalize topper.

“We even got a table of 12 toddlers to sit and sing happy birthday,” says Brackett. “It was such a joy to be able to celebrate our little girl and remind her how incredibly special she is to all of us.”
