Green Slime-in-a-Jar with Bugs

Sticky green slime is great as a party favor or an inedible candy substitute for trick-or-treaters.

materials

  • 2 teaspoons guar gum (available at health food stores)
  • Hot water (approx. 110F)
  • Green food coloring
  • Strainer
  • Spatula
  • 2 teaspoons borax
  • Hinged-lid jars (Pictured: Hinged-lid jars, 2" by 3 ¼", 4 oz.,  $1.50 each, containerstore.com)
  • Plastic spiders
  • Double-sided tape

steps

  1. Stir together guar gum, 4 cups of hot water, and food coloring.
  2. Push mixture through strainer with spatula to remove lumps. Mix borax with 1 ½ cups hot water until dissolved; stir slowly into guar-gum mixture.
  3. Let cool (the slime will thicken). Decant into lidded containers; add a few plastic spiders.
  4. Print our label template, cut out, and adhere to jars with double-sided tape.
