Thermochromic Kinetic Sand

Remember the mood rings you owned as a kid? Similarly, this special kind of kinetic sand shifts in shape and color! The heat of your hands will change the color of the sand as you play with it.

materials

  • Bowl
  • Fine white sand
  • Cornstarch
  • Whisk
  • Water
  • Dish soap
  • Thermochromic pigment

steps

  1. Pre-bake the sand to remove any and all water (1-inch deep layer in a pan at 250 for 30 minutes; let cool completely before handling).
  2. Add one cup white play sand and 6 tablespoons cornstarch to a large mixing bowl; mix until well combined.
  3. Add one tablespoon of thermochromic pigment; mix well until combined.
  4. Mix 1 cup water with 1 teaspoon of dish soap.
  5. Mix well to combine.
  6. To the bowl, slowly add while mixing 4 tbsp water.
  7. Mix well.
  8. Add more water, slowly, as needed until the sand is the desired consistency.
  9. Mold into shapes and cut as desired.
  10. The heat of your hands will change the color of the sand as you play with it.
