A great craft activity for kids, here's how to make a peg doll and miniature-sized drum to populate your Ramadan village set.

This idea comes from our friend Manal Aman of Hello Holy Days. The Ramadan drummer is a cross-cultural tradition in which a man or woman wearing traditional clothes will perform through the neighborhood with a drum in hand, playing music and singing verses of poetry in order to wake people up, encourage them to eat, and keep the fast. Learn more about the tradition of the Ramadan drummer. To complete the set pictured here, learn how to make Ramadan Village Houses.

  • Wooden peg doll
  • Felt in white, yellow, purple, and brown
  • Hot-glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Black marker
  • Bottle cap
  • Toothpick
  • Optional: Craft paint

  1. Optional prep: Use craft paint to color his skin in any shade you'd like. (Here, we used the unfinished wooden peg doll without any paint.)
  2. Cut felt into the various parts shown in the photo. Here, we have a white rectangle to represent his pants and shirt, a thin yellow rectangle for his belt, and a purple rectangle for his vest. Cut out a beard from brown felt. For his hat, a purple rectangle will be used in addition to a small piece of yellow felt cut like a tassel.

  3. Glue the clothes and beard onto drummer. Start with the white rectangle, then add the yellow belt and then the vest.

  4. For the Fez hat, roll the piece of purple rectangle inwards from the two ends as shown. Glue into place. Trim off tail too for a circular hat brim. Attach the yellow tassel to the top of the hat. Glue hat onto the Ramadan drummer.

  5. Draw a pair of eyes with a black marker.
  6. To make a miniature drum, prepare your materials including a bottle cap, toothpick, and felt in brown, yellow, and purple colors.

  7. Glue the bottle cap onto the brown felt. Trim the brown felt to the circular shape of the bottle cap (this will be the top of your drum).

  8. For the sides of the drum, wrap a piece of yellow felt around the bottle cap, and glue into place. Cut out some small triangles from the purple felt and glue around the yellow felt to form a design on the drum.
  9. Break a toothpick in half and glue the two pieces on top of the drum.
