The days of "plain" dog names like Fido and Sparky are long past -- this year, the hottest pet names were based on pop culture trends, such as Pokemon Go, "Stranger Things" and the play Hamilton.

However, there were also some unique pop culture pet names that saw spikes over the course of the year. The source notes that Eleven and Barb were up 12 percent, and Hamilton rose drastically, particularly in major urban areas -- it was up 96 percent in Washington, D.C. These newly popular names are no surprise given that the research revealed a whopping 75 percent of millennials name their pets after movie or TV characters or celebrities.
On the decline were "cutesy" names like Pookie or Snuggles, as well as classic pup names like Fido and Sparky. Will these traditional names make a comeback in 2017? We'll have to wait and see!
