In episode 7, Martha ventures to the Gulf states -- Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida -- for inspiration and returns with three sensational desserts: Southern Caramel Cake with an irresistible caramel whipped cream, a super chocolaty Mississippi Mud Tart, and Lane Cake, a bourbon-spiked raisin, pecan, and coconut cake that dates back to the late 19th century and is named for its creator, Emma Rylander Lane.

The Pennsylvania Dutch certainly know their way around a dessert! Martha’s riffs on four classics include Montgomery Pie, which pairs a molasses and lemon filling with a cakey buttermilk top crust, Apple Dumplings with the most gorgeous leaf cutouts, and two kinds of whoopee pies -- pumpkin and chocolate.

South Atlantic
While we’d wait until peak berry season to whip up the Classic Strawberry Shortcake Martha makes in this episode, the Virginia Peanut Pie (peanut is the new pecan!), Buttermilk Ice Cream, and Lady Baltimore Cake (for the uninitiated, this is a delectable frosted white cake filled with dried fruits and nuts) make spectacular desserts any time of year.
