Introduction

This pattern for a crochet Thanksgiving turkey, courtesy of Commonthread by DMC, is just the thing to keep you warm and cozy in the weeks leading up to the holidays. For those of you not planning on wearing it as a hat, this utterly memorable piece can also serve as the perfect finishing touch for your Thanksgiving tablescape.

sc= single crochet

dc= double crochet

ch = chain

sl st = slip stitch

  • Crochet hook 6
  • Tapestry needle size 16 or craft needle
  • Scissors
  • Polyester fiberfill stuffing

steps

  1. To make hat using Natura XL 92:
    Note: at the beginning of each rnd always do 2 ch and finish with 1 sl st.
    Rnd 1: 9 dc and finish with 1 sl st. (9)
    Rnd 2: 2 ch. 2dc in each st (18)
    Rnd 3: *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st* .* repeat from * to * all the way around.(27)
    Rnd 4: *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 2 st* .* repeat from * to * all the way around.(36)
    Rnd 5: *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 3st* .* repeat from * to * all the way around.(45)
    Rnd 5: *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 4st* .* repeat from * to * all the way around.(54)
    Rnd 6: 54 dc (54)
    Rnd 7: 54 dc (54)

  2. To make turkey leg using Natura XL 92 (2 each):
    Note: at the beginning of each rnd always do 1 ch and finish with 1 sl st.
    Magic loop.
    Rnd1: 6 sc in magic ring and pull the ring to close (6st).
    Rnd 2: 2sc in each st around (12 st).
    Rnd 3: [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] six times (18 st)
    Rnd 4: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 st] six times (24 st)
    Rnd 5: 24 sc (24 st)
    Rnd 6: Decrease. *1 sc. 1sc in 2 stitches* .* repeat from * to * all the way around. (16st)
    Rnd 7: 16 sc (16st)
    Rnd 8: Decrease. *1 sc. 1sc in 2 stitches* .* repeat from * to * all the way around. (11st)
    Rnd 9: 11 sc (11st)
    Rnd 10: 11 sc (11st)
    Rnd 11: Decrease. *1 sc. 1sc in 2 stitches* .* repeat from * to * all the way around. (8st)
    Rnd 12: 8 sc (8st)
    Rnd 13: 8 sc (8st)
    Rnd 14: 8 sc (8st)
    Rnd 15: Decrease. *1 sc. 1 sc in 2 stitches* (5st)
    Rnd 16: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st* .* repeat from * to * all the way around. (8st)
    Fill 75% with Polyester fiberfill stuffing. Leave it open.
  3. To make bone of the turkey leg using Natura XL 01 (make 2):
    For each bone, make 2 circles:
    Circle #1:
    Magic loop
    Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring and pull the ring to close (6st). Cut the yarn.
    Make another circle exactly the same but dont cut the yarn after the 1st rnd. Use it to join both circles with 1 sl st from the last stitch of the circle #1 and the last stitch of the circle #2.
    Rnd 1 of cojoined circles: 6 sc around the circle #1. Skip the stitchs in between the 2 circles cojoined. Make 6cs around the circle #2. (6+6= 12 st)
    Rnd 2: 12 st (12st) Skip the stitches in between the 2 circles.
    Rnd 3: Decrease. 3 sc. 1sc in 2 stitches. Repeat 1 more time. We decrease from the side of the bone. (8st)
    Rnd 4: 8 sc (8st)
    Rnd 5: 8 sc (8st)
    Rnd 6: Fill with polyester fiberfill stuffing and sew it to the leg with a craft needle.
    Sew both legs to the side of the hat with the craft needle and Natura XL 92.
