The Internet went wild Wednesday when Martha Stewart live-tweeted from the 2016 Cannes Lions festival, an international advertising gathering. Why? The buzz began at the Daily Mail’s Seriously Popular Yacht Party, when Martha was seated next to Jonathan Cheban, a reality TV star who is Kim Kardashian’s best friend. Only, Martha didn’t know that. (Not that she’s a stranger to the Kardashian family: Martha wrote about Kim for TIME’s “Most Influential People” list!) So, she did what any journalist does: She set out to find the answer—on Twitter!
“#seriouslypopular @DailyMail @MailOnline do you know this guy?? He says he is well known,” Martha tweeted, igniting the beginning of a flurry of retweets, replies, and news stories.
While some mistook her question for throwing shade, Martha exclusively tells us, “I was sitting at the same table with him and really had no idea who he was until he started talking.”
Once the two were properly introduced, Martha cleared things up with a second tweet: “Better photo of jonathan who is very famous bff of the kardashians who knew!”

And apparently, Cheban wasn’t bothered by Martha’s question. “Initially he was upset, but then after all the attention he saw that he was getting, he’s probably not upset anymore,” Martha added. “I seriously did not know who he was.”
Ultimately, the two had a blast. “'I love her. We literally had the best dinner, she's a legend,” Cheban told Daily Mail. “I'm obsessed with her, she's so gorgeous. She does not watch the Kardashians, which is funny. She tweeted a picture of me just for fun then everyone went nuts. I just got like 37 Google alerts about this story about Martha and me!”

An hour later, Martha was already documenting the next big news of the night: Jason Derulo’s performance. “Now Jason derulo is singing for us Quite a show It's hot and he is shedding his clothes,” she tweeted, and later, “Down to his shirtsleeves.”
Perhaps sensing that her followers needed proof, she shared one last photo of the singer sans shirt. “Jason really did shed his shirt and continued the amazing show.”
Martha told us, “Jason Derulo’s performance was excellent. His two backup dancers were fantastic. It was in an un-air-conditioned space which is why he had to take off his clothes.”
Asked why she took to Twitter throughout the night, Martha put it simply: “I use Twitter appropriately—to ask questions and to inform.” It’s true that Martha has always embraced social media as a method of growing her brand. In fact, that’s exactly what she was at the Cannes Lions to speak about, and that’s the part of the event she wants to focus on.
“You cannot fake a brand. You can’t build a brand overnight. People try and find out very quickly how difficult it is to do that,” she said in her speech. As for Jonathan and Jason? Well, she’s moved on.
