Christina Applegate stands in her pristine, newly renovated kitchen looking as lovely and comfortable as she does on the big screen. Her hand rests on the smooth, white finish of her new Caesarstone countertops as she cheerfully chats about everything from the simplicity of designing her space with Laurel & Wolf to the joys of motherhood and playing the vivacious Veronica Corningstone in the cult-comedy Anchorman. You would never guess that a flood recently ravaged her home, destroying the floors and ruining her sanctuary.
"This house was built in 1985, and the kitchen was the only thing that hadn't been redone -- ever! It was god-awful. I'd come through here for 20 years and just feel angry," says Christina, gesturing at her newly renovated space.
Even though Christina always despised her outdated kitchen, she felt that in a sense it still held the house together. It was the heart of her home, and she feared that a lengthy renovation would steal away from her ability to cook and spend time with her family in the space. Then one day her entire home flooded, destroying all the floors. It was the unfortunate answer to her kitchen woes. "We thought, we're going to have to rip up every single bit of flooring in the house, so we might as well redo the kitchen."
Now married with a child of her own, Christina had a clear vision of what she wanted for her family's kitchen and quickly realized she needed help executing it.
Completely rehabilitating a kitchen is no easy task, especially for a busy mom whose full-time job consists of 14-hour days on location. As Christina worked with Laurel & Wolf designer Jessica Today, she realized all the traditional challenges of renovating a space were removed from the process. She didn't have to deal with designers and contractors constantly coming to her home, as she was able to easily communicate with Jessica and see what the space would look like through style boards. With each exchange, Christina's dream kitchen materialized.
Jessica's design is functional and family-friendly. Clean, white countertops by Caesarstone provide the perfect surface for food preparation, while Kohler fixtures, Ann Sacks tile, and tableware by Table + Dine create a bright and polished ambiance that flows effortlessly through the entire kitchen.
The heart of Christina's home is finally a place where she enjoys spending her time and exercising her passion for cooking. "Now it's just so easy," she says. "The house feels brighter, more open, and Jessica's smart use of space is just amazing to me." While a beautiful mudroom puts shoes in their place and a fresh laundry room makes the task of laundry loads more enjoyable, it's the clever kitchen storage that provides a renewed sense of order and organization in her home. The new space allows Christina to focus on more elaborate meals and quality family time.
Accented with art by Christina's daughter, a new dining nook off the kitchen has become a key spot for spending quality family time. "It's so much nicer, so much more comfortable, and we have this nice tufted banquette," Christina says of the dining area. "It feels like a place where we can celebrate now, as opposed to one that we can't wait to get out of as fast as possible -- which is what it felt like the last 20 years of living here..."
As Christina's career continues to thrive, this newly designed space helps her find some much-needed balance between her personal life and successful acting career. In a house that feels more like a home, she's ready to tackle any (personal or professional) role that comes her way.
