Moody Master Bedroom Makeover: See How a Dark and Gloomy Room Found Light and Space

The last four years of home ownership have been filled with projects from replacing our sprinkler systems to updating our kitchen and everything in between. The master bedroom had lain in neglect and it was time we tackled it. Here's how my friend Kate and I took the room from blah to amazing!

When my friend Kate began talking about wanting to do something with her master bedroom I jumped at the chance! We partnered with Target on the project and the whole thing came together pretty effortlessly. (The chain's new fall collection is gorgeous and flying out of stores, so get it while you can!) Here's what the room looked like:

We love the big doors that open to the back patio and steep-pitched high ceilings. With plenty of other projects to tackle since the house was purchased and a new baby that arrived last February, completing the master bedroom just got put on hold. Kate wanted to make the space feel like a calm retreat that also echoed the laid-back California vibe of the rest of the place, which I love. Here's the mood board we put together to get started:

This rug from Rugs Direct is really what the whole rest of the room was designed around. I love that it has so many great colors, but still feels nice and muted at the same time. That particular rug wasn't available, but I love the one we ended up using just as much! Once that was settled, next we had to find a king-size bed. I feel like once you have kids, a king-size bed is a non-negotiable! We found this navy linen bed with the nailhead detail at Bellacor and couldn't be happier with how it turned out in the room. Such a great fabric, and I love the wingback detail. You know who didn't like the wingback detail? Those gorgeous Target brass light fixtures you see in the mood board. They just looked kind of strange peeking out from behind the wings, so we traded them in for these new Threshold lamps from Target -- Kate regrets not keeping one for herself.

What a transformation!

When I'm looking for art for our house, one of my first stops is always Minted. I love its selection and variety of framing choices. I also love how accessibly priced their pieces are. This print was perfect for our laidback-California-cool vibe. (The bench and striped pillow are from Target and the smaller pillow is from Local + Lejos, a great line that works with artisans from all over the world.)
