Yield:
5 cups

Serve as an alternative to or in addition to traditional cranberry relish.

Ingredients

  • 8 Red Delicious apples (about 4 pounds), peeled and chopped into 1-inch pieces

  • cup sugar

  • 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice (from 2 lemons)

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions

  1. Place apples, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, and 1/2 cup water in a large saucepan, and cook over medium heat until very tender, stirring often so that apples do not scorch, about 45 minutes. If necessary, add additional water to apple mixture, up to 1 cup, while apples cook.

  2. Remove the mixture from heat. Using a potato masher, mash into sauce, leaving some of the chunks. Let cool. If making ahead of time, chill, covered, until ready to use. Allow to warm to room temperature before serving.
