Martha’s 12 Tips on Keeping the Nursery Spotlessly Clean
Learn to Launder Properly
Plan weekly washings for all bedding materials such as blankets, sheets, pillowcases, and mattress pads. Bedding should be bathed in hot water of approximately 130 degrees.
When shopping for cleaning products, search specifically for items free from ammonia, chlorine, and fragrance. These ingredients can provoke respiratory distress and skin irritation in children.
Stock Up on Stuffed Toys
Invest in machine-washable stuffed toys, and regularly wash plush playthings to keep germs at bay.
Curtail Curtains and Upholstery
Limit upholstery in the nursery to prevent the accumulation of dust mites. Dust mites are the second leading cause of allergic reactions, and therefore require significant consideration. While total eradication of dust mites is impossible, limiting dust will in turn greatly limit their proliferation. Fabric wall hangings, carpets, curtains, and drapes are common sources of dust, and should only be included in moderation in your nursery design.
Change Up the Changing Table
Launder the soft pad covers of your child’s changing table frequently to fend off the spread of germs.
Alleviate Allergies with Frozen Toys
If your child is allergy-prone, store soft toys in the freezer for a period of 24 hours before washing. Hot water is an excellent alternative as well.
