Something to Celebrate: The End of Cherry Season
Champagne and Cherries
Cherry season is delightful -- our only complaint? It's far too short. The gleaming red stone fruits burst onto shelves mid-summer and disappear far too soon. As we approach the end of the summer, we look forward to cooler weather but lament the lack of our favorite snack fruit: the cherry. So say goodbye with a bang! Or bing? Throw a "Farewell to Cherry Season" party with the celebrated stone fruit as the guest of honor.
First Things First: Champagne
You can't throw a spectular farewell party without raising a glass of bubbly. Toss some end-of-the-season cherries into your glass to keep it on theme.
Have Fruit at Your Fingertips
If you're serious about celebrating the end of cherry season, every detail has to be in place, even your fingernails! To really be on theme, paint small cherries onto your fingertips. Use a No. 1 (very thin) paintbrush from a paint supply store to make a detailed portrait of your favorite summer fruit.
Keep It Cheesy
Sweet (but ephemeral!) cherries are excellent foils for soft robiola cheese. Serve with a baguette for an appropriately cherry-ful appetizer.
We Can't Beer to Say Goodbye!
Even the brews at the party should honor the succulent stone fruit. Serve cherry-infused beer -- guests can sip and mourn appropriately.
Sweeten the Salad
Cherries aren't just for dessert! The ripe tang of sweet cherries in this bulgur salad pairs well with nutty, hearty bulgur and walnuts.
A Cherry Sort of Chicken
The main dish at your farewell-to-cherry-season party should most definitely include cherries. In this seared-chicken salad, cherries are used subtly, tinting the salad with summer sweetness.
We love pork paired with sweet sauces -- especially cherry sauce. For a hearty farewell, serve this pork tenderloin over cooked polenta with a sweet cherry drizzle!
It was Ice to Have You, Cherries
Uber-sweet cherries need very little to be delicious (that's why we love them so much!) There are only four ingredients in this icy cherry granita -- perfect for easy, end-of-summer assembling!
The "Apple" of Our Pie
It's not a summer party without a stone-fruit pie. Sweet cherry pie with an elegant lattice crust lets lady cherry really show off.
Chocolate and Cherry? Absolutely Necessary
Everything could use a little chocolate, right? Let the popular confection soothe your end-of-cherry-season woes.
Preserve the Cherry Flavor
Prepare a large batch of cherry preserves and give to guests as a party favor. Til next year's cherry season, the sweet jammy spread will have to do!
