There are three hand stitches that will get you through just about any basic task -- the slip stitch, the backstitch, and the running stitch -- and knowing how to apply them allows you to mend a seam, hem a garment, or fasten a button with ease. Here are a few basic ideas to practice and master each one.
Scented Sachets
These pretty little pockets are filled with moth-repelling lavender buds. Two squares are sewn together, leaving a 1 1/2-inch opening on one side and a half-inch seam allowance.

Felted Stuffed Animals
These small stuffed animals -- a Fair Isle lamb, a cable-knit chicken, and an argyle pig -- make a cuddly menagerie for any child. And the floppy ears, wings, and such are easily added with hand sewing.
