Starry Nights: DIY Constellation Lampshade

Stargazers -- or anyone looking to give her room lighting a dreamier dimension -- will love this easy decorating trick. All you need is a few crafting tools and an inexpensive white lampshade. Flick on the switch come nightfall and enjoy the customized twinkle that gleams through.

Screw punch, $25; and multisurface satin acrylic craft paint, in Wild Blueberry and Deep Sea, $2 for 2 oz., by Martha Stewart Crafts,


  • Two different shades dark-blue acrylic craft paint, mixed

  • Paintbrush

  • White lampshade

  • Cutting mat

  • Clear tape

  • Screw punch

  • Silver paint marker


  1. Download and print the template for your astrological sign. Resize to fit shade, if necessary.

  2. Apply 2 coats of mixed paint to shade, allowing each coat to dry 1 hour.

  3. Place shade on its side on cutting mat. Tape template to inside of shade. (If shade has a metal harp, remove it first.)

  4. Punch holes in shade as indicated on template, alternating blade sizes on screw punch to make large and small stars.

  5. On outside of shade, outline holes and connect dots with marker.
