Pies for Pi Day: Can You Guess Which Is America’s Favorite?
Our friends at ThinkGeek.com asked pastry fans all over the country what their favorite slice of pie is and then created this fun infographic to show the results.
The overwhelming dominance of apple pie might not surprise you, but there are pockets of resistance (see Florida, Nevada, and the Dakotas, among others). Whether you follow your state's predilection or not, we have the recipes to support your pecan pie preference, your love for key lime, or your craze for coconut cream.
Really, are you surprised that apple is the pie of choice in the majority of states? This is our favorite apple pie recipe.
Not a close second in popularity, but second nonetheless is Chocolate Cream Pie, the pick of Alabama, Massachusetts, Wyoming, and Vermont.
Third is Key Lime. That it should be the slice of choice in Florida might be expected, it's also the pick in Louisiana and Arkansas -- and it ties for first place in Rhode Island*, Maryland, and DC. Cherry is the favorite in Oregon, Missouri, Ohio, and joint favorite with apple in Tennessee. Our preference is for Sour Cherry Pie.
There's an interesting pink stripe in the Plains states: Strawberry Rhubarb Pie was the pick of North Dakota and Nebraska, while South Dakota rates Strawberry-Rhubarb and Peach Pie the same. (*Strawberry Rhubarb is also a divider in Rhode Island.)
Lemon meringue pie is tops in Idaho and ties for the number-one slot in West Virginia with Cherry and Strawberry Pie (no rhubarb here!). We hear it's also a popular choice in Germany and the U.K. And if more people tried Martha's Mile-High Lemon Meringue Pie, we know the popularity of this pie would surge.
Should your tastes veer savory rather than sweet, well, the Bluegrass state is with you. Kentucky went for Shepherd's Pie, while Montana has a two-way spilt between Shepherd's Pie and Chicken Pot Pie.
