  • Fabrics

  • Sewing machine and supplies

  • Twill tape or ribbon

  • Safety pins

  1. For each bag, cut 2 pieces of fabric, 1 for outside, 1 for lining. (For our bags, pieces were 12 1/2 by 34 inches for a finished bag 11 1/2 inches wide by 15 1/2 inches long; and 8 1/2 by 22 inches for a finished bag 7 1/2 inches wide by 9 1/2 inches long.) Pin rectangles, right sides facing, along long sides; sew with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Turn right-side out; iron flat.

  2. For drawstring channels, double-hem short sides: Fold over 1/2 inch, then 1 inch; stitch.

  3. Fold bag in half, right sides together, so hems meet. Stitch sides, stopping 1 1/2 inches from edge. Cut 2 pieces of twill tape to a 30-inch length. Attach a safety pin to one; thread it through both channels, working left to right and back. Repeat with the second, in other direction.

  4. Knot ends. Turn bag right-side out.
