Introduction

To change the look of the dragonflies, vary the length of the bodies and the shape of the wings, using the photograph as a guide.

materials

  • 24-gauge wire

  • 3 mm beads, including round beads

  • 4 mm beads, including gold beads

  • Small and large teardrop beads

  • 12 mm beads

  • 1/2-inch glass bugle beads

  • Round-nose pliers

  • Wire cutters

  • Long, glass bugle beads

  • Long, twisted metal beads

  • 2 mm gold beads

  • Long, thin bead

steps

  1. Make the body: Fold a 12-inch length of 24-gauge wire in half. Slide a 3 mm bead toward the folded end, followed by a long, thin bead. Add a 3 mm bead, a large twist bead, a 4 mm bead, a small teardrop bead, a 4 mm bead, a large teardrop bead, and a 4 mm bead. Add a 12 mm bead for the head.

  2. Make the antennae: Push apart the two wire ends sticking out of the head. Slide a 1/2-inch glass bugle bead onto each. Trim wires to 3/16 inch above beads. Using round-nose pliers, make a loop at end of each. Fit ends into tops of bugle beads to secure.

  3. Make upper (large) wings: Cut a 24-inch length of 24-gauge wire. Slide four 2 mm beads onto wire followed by one long glass bugle bead. Repeat sequence. Bend wire at a 45-degree angle. Add one 4 mm gold bead, one long twisted metal bead, and one 4 mm gold bead. Bend wire again. Repeat sequence in reverse, starting with long bugle bead. (This is the first top wing.) Twist wires together once to lock in place. Make the other upper wing in the same way.

  4. Make lower (small) wings: Onto remaining wire, slide one long bugle bead, three 2 mm gold beads, and one long bugle bead. Bend wire at a 45-degree angle. Add one 3 mm round bead. Bend the wire again; repeat sequence in reverse, starting with long bugle bead. (This is the third wing.) Twist the wires together once to lock in place. Make the other lower wing in the same way.

  5. Attach body: Wrap remaining wire tightly around top of the small bead, just under head, and again, over bottom of the small bead. Bring wire around to center of wings. Slide a 1/2-inch bugle bead onto wire. Trim wire 3/16 inch above bead. Using round-nose pliers, make a loop on end. Fit end into top of bead to secure. Hang ornament from this bead.
