Braided Wreath Ornament

This tabletop tree is laden with decorations inspired by Martha’s Polish heritage. Straw ornaments, here burnished with mica powder, symbolize hope for good things in the new year. This braided wreath is joined on this pruned and clipped spruce tree by a straw wreath, wheat bunches, wheat stars, gilded eggs, and golden glass balls.

materials

  • 6 pieces of arrow wheat, 10 to 12 inches each

  • 28-gauge wire

steps

  1. Soak pieces of arrow wheat overnight, then wire them together 1/2 inch below tips.

  2. Divide stems into three sets of two, and braid. Pull braid around to form a circle, and wrap 28-gauge wire at the same spot as other wire. Grasping three tips in each hand, pull in opposite directions to finish.
