What You'll Need

Materials

  • Natural-cowhide leather strap
  • Awl or rotary punch
  • Nickel-plated flat key ring, 1 1/4 inches
  • Large-eyed needle
  • Waxed-cotton cord
  • Craft knife
  • Rivets and setter
  • Paint pen, ribbon and leather glue, craft tool, alphabet-and- number set (optional)
  • Rivet closure diagram
  • Waxed twine closure diagram

Instructions

  1. Waxed-Twine Closure: Following dimensions in diagram, cut a strip of leather.

  2. With awl and a mallet, make 4 small holes as indicated on diagram.

  3. Slide ring onto strap and bend so holes align. Thread needle with cord and sew closed, stitching through twice and finishing with a square knot. With craft knife, trim ends to make even. Finish sides or ends with paint pen, if desired.

  4. Rivet Closure: Following dimensions in diagram, cut a strip of leather.

  5. With awl and a mallet, or rotary punch, make 2 holes as indicated on diagram.

  6. Slide ring onto strap and bend so holes align. Set rivet.
