Though I'm originally from India, I love to celebrate this American holiday. It's such a wholesome appreciation of the basic things in life -- family, friends, food, home. I like bringing together humble, natural materials and textures at my table: burlap for place mats, a leather tie for the carafe, and block- printed napkins. Candles are my go-to when it comes to centerpieces. I kept this one simple with lanterns that evoke early America. My favorite vases hold a branch or two of seasonal foliage rather than flowers.
Keep It Simple
A basic table allows the focus to be on what's really important -- the food and the company. A pearl-gray plate and just one fork and knife (culled from flea markets) per seat keep place settings relaxed.
Big, bulky centerpieces take up too much space on the table and impede conversation. Casually arranged candles and small vases keep things simple and flexible.
The variety of footed glasses and tumblers (as opposed to a matched set) lend the table an eclectic, understated charm.
