The finest china is hand-painted by skilled artisans, but anyone with a steady hand can decorate everyday dishware. Porcelain paint, available at crafts stores, comes in tubes with penlike tips. Sawtooth, dentil, and star designs are made with repeating dots, so they are easy to replicate. Practice on old or broken dishware or porcelain tiles until you are able to apply a pattern freehand. There is no need to make a set of matching dishes: Paint all the dishes with one color but vary the motif, or create a single motif in different colors. Allow the paint to dry, and then set the decorations by baking the dishes in the oven according to the directions on the tube's label.
