Solid-colored pillows look more distinctive when embellished with pretty pom-poms or buttons. Adding them to both sides of a cushion will prevent the thread from straining the fabric and tearing. The tufting will keep the fill in the insert from shifting, so the pillow will rarely need to be fluffed.

Mark the placement of the buttons or pom-poms on the pillow cover with a disappearing-ink fabric pen.
Secure each embellishment with a double length of thread, passing through the pillow insert and inserting the needle into a matching button or pom-pom on the other side.
