Charles H. Baldwin and Sons
Although the family had been involved in making extracts for three generations previously, Charles H. Baldwin and his father, H.M. Baldwin, officially established the company Charles H. Baldwin and Sons in 1888. Charles Baldwin peddled his extracts all over the Northeast while his wife stayed home and raised the family, tended the farm, and packed up the orders to ship to her husband for distribution. The current owner, Earl B. Moffatt, is the great-grandson of the founder.
Black Ash Baskets
For thousands of years, baskets served as indispensable objects in many cultures. Although modern society is less dependent on them, our long connection seems to have left an archetypal imprint, a symbol of elemental simplicity. Their inclusion in our homes can soften the edges of our often hectic daily lives. Today, we visit Jonathan Kline, a New York basket maker, to learn the basics of the craft.
Angela Adams Rugs
Angela Adams grew up on an island 12 miles off the coast of Maine. This unusual upbringing helped shape her unique perspective on design: Fashions and styles come and go on the mainland, but on the island the decades seem to linger. Today, we learn about Angela's designs, which are known for their sense of timelessness, simplicity, and balance. All designs are inspired by the natural beauty of life off the coast of Maine.
Carlisle Restoration Flooring
In the 1960s, Dale Carlisle, the founder of Carlisle Restoration Flooring, was building homes reminiscent of those he remembered from his childhood in New Hampshire -- the old center-chimney colonials, saltboxes, and traditional capes that still grace New England today. He found one common theme within our country's early homes: Every one had wide-plank floors. Dale wanted these floors for the homes he built and restored. Today, we learn how he recreated the authentic wide-plank floors of our heritage.
