Applique Scarves

A warm scarf is a seasonal staple, and you can easily add a unique flair to its functionality with just a few basic embellishments. This simple technique requires little more than scraps of wool felt, embroidery thread, and a blanket stitch. To create the shapes for the scarf, use our downloadable templates, or trace around a cookie cutter in the shape of your choice.

Applique Scarf How-To
1. Trace either the template or cookie-cutter shape onto the felt, and cut it out. Pin the shape in place on the scarf, and sew it on using a blanket stitch. To create a blanket stitch, first anchor your knot between the felt shape and the scarf by taking a stitch through the front of the scarf. Bring the needle to the front through the back, piercing both the felt and scarf layers, 1/8 inch to the right and 1/8 inch from the edge of the felt shape. Bring needle out to the edge, keeping the loop under the needle.

2. Continue stitching, working from left to right, until the shape is sewed all around.
