Sanibel Island is a lush, 12-mile stretch of land off Florida's Gulf Coast, where a vast 6,400 acres have been designated as national wildlife refuge since 1945.

Dr. P.J. Dietschel has been saving wild animals for more than 20 years. And, like the rare woodstorks that return every winter to the the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (C.R.O.W.), she has made the clinic for the rehabilitation of wildlife her home away from home.

Last year, C.R.O.W. took in almost 4,000 patients.

P.J. will try anything to heal her patients, including electro-acupuncture. Although commonly practiced on domestic animals in Chinese medicine, this technique has never been tried before on wildlife such as these native gopher tortoises.
