A baby blanket should be soft, warm, attractive, and, most important, washable. Microfleece -- a thinner version of Polarfleece -- makes a cozy baby blanket; it meets all of the aforementioned requirements and is reasonably priced, too. For the blanket, stitch two pieces of contrasting-colored fabric together. Add appliques -- such as ducks, hearts, and stars -- in different colors.

Use the following techniques to create a blanket that's as simple or elaborate as you want.

1. Print out an applique template, and enlarge or reduce it on a copier to the desired size. Trace it onto thin cardboard, and cut it out. You can also create your own pattern; just keep the shape simple and solid for best results. Using tailor's chalk, trace the template onto fabric that's a different color from what you're using for the blanket. Cut out appliques.

2. Pin the applique to the fabric you're using for the blanket, taking into account the 1/4-inch seam allowance and any border you might to create.

3. Use the sewing machine's zigzag or overlock stitch to attach the applique. (You can also use a straight stitch or even hand-stitch the applique.) Be sure to go slowly and carefully around the entire perimeter of your applique.

4. Match up the two pieces of fabric you're using for the blanket, with the appliqued sides facing each other. Pin the right sides together. Sew a 1/4-inch seam around the entire perimeter, leaving a 4-inch opening on one side. Turn blanket right-side out.

5. At this point you would normally press the blanket flat with a hot iron, but never do this with fleece because it can melt. Instead, press edges flat with your fingers, and pin in place around the entire perimeter. Hand-stitch the opening shut.

6. Place artist's tape on your sewing machine 2 inches to the right of the needle. Use this as a guide to create a 2-inch flange from the edge. Create the flange border with your zigzag or overlock stitch.
