Tools and Materials
For Stenciling Fabric:
Artists' acrylic paint from Utrecht (40 percent burnt umber, 40 percent white, 20 percent yellow ochre)
Stencil brush
Cotton duck (dark brown)
Caning lattice stencil from Designer Stencils (#3477)
Stencil tack (or any spray adhesive)

For Covering Seats:
Stenciled fabric (four inches larger than seat)
1-inch-thick foam (high-density polyurethane foam), cut slightly larger than plywood (1/8 inch all around)
Batting (4 inches larger than seat)
Plywood circle cut to fit seat (1/4 inch thick to 1/2 inch thick)
Staple gun
Cambric fabric

Faux-Caned Chair Cushions How-To
1. Lightly spray stencil with stencil tack or adhesive. Load stencil brush with paint mixture. Pounce paint into entire stencil onto fabric. (Due to the heavy texture and absorption of the fabric, you may want to stencil surface twice (start at the beginning, and don't wait for first coat to dry). Stencil pattern will need to be repeated to create design surface area big enough make seat covers.

2. Remove stencil from fabric to reveal painted area.

3. For covering seats, lay down batting on table. Stack foam and then plywood on top. Pull batting around plywood, and staple in place.

4. Pull opposite side tightly, and staple around fabric to complete seat cushion.

5. Lay completed cushion facedown onto fabric. Repeat stapling process.

6. Trim excess fabric. Finish bottom by stapling a circle of cambric fabric to underside of seat. Set complete seat into chair frame.
